This map shows locations where different soil textures dominate in the northern Lake States. Colors in the map represent areas where a particular textural group is predominant in a soil association. Areas with sandy soils tend to be dry and support pine forests, loamy and coarse-loamy soils are productive for forest growth and support hardwoods, while fine-textured soils may be waterlogged and have a forest cover that includes wetlands species, or at higher positions in the landscape may support hardwood forests. Soil associations are made up of a group of geographically associated soils which may be quite different from each other but occur together in repeatable patterns. The information used to make this map was derived from soil family particle-size classes which describe average soil texture, usually measured within a 10-40 inch depth. This map should be used only for general interpretations, because site-specific soil textures will vary from the average condition depicted here.
