This map shows locations of loamy or coarse-loamy textured soils in the northern Lake States. These soils, made up of roughly equal proportions of sand, silt, and clay, generally support productive forest growth because of their favorable moisture and nutrient capacities. Colors in the map represent ranges in percentage of loamy and coarse-loamy soils within soil associations. Soil associations are made up of a group of geographically associated soils which may be quite different from each other but occur together in repeatable patterns. The information used to make this map was derived from soil family particle-size classes, which describe an average soil texture, usually measured within a 10-40 inch depth. This map should be used only for general interpretations, because site-specific soil textures will vary from the average condition depicted here. |
