This map shows locations of fine textured soils in the northern Lake States. These soils contain a high proportion of clay, which sometimes limits forest growth because much of the rainfall runs off and does not soak into the soil. Also, when these soils become waterlogged they are slow to dry out. Colors in the map represent ranges in percentage of fine-textured soils within soil associations. Soil associations are made up of a group of geographically associated soils which may be quite different from each other but occur together in repeatable patterns. The information used to make this map was derived from soil family particle-size classes, which describe an average soil texture, usually measured within a 10-40 inch depth. This map should be used only for general interpretations, because site-specific soil textures will vary from the average condition depicted here. |
