This map shows locations of soils with different drainage classes in the northern Lake States. Colors in the map represent areas where a particular drainage class group is predominant in a soil association. Areas with excessive drainage tend to be in sandy soils with pine forests; well-drained soils typically support hardwoods; moderately-well to somewhat poorly drained soils often have mixed hardwood-conifer forests; and, poorly and very poorly drained soils are usually in wetlands. Soil associations are made up of a group of geographically associated soils which may be quite different from each other but occur together in repeatable patterns. The information used to make this map was derived from soil drainage classes of the soils that make up soil associations. This map should be used only for general interpretations, because site-specific soil drainage classes will vary from the average condition depicted here. |
