This map shows locations where bedrock is near the surface in the northern Lake States. Bedrock that lies close to the surface contributes weathering minerals to the soil and sometimes influences the composition and growth of vegetation. Bedrock can also cause a perched water table. Colors in the map represent ranges in percentage of bedrock occurring at 20-40 inch depths within soil associations. Soil associations are made up of a group of geographically associated soils which may be quite different from each other but occur together in repeatable patterns. The information used to make this map was derived from bedrock depths of the soil units that make up soil associations. This map should be used only for general interpretations, because site-specific bedrock depths will vary from the average condition depicted here.
