Why is this a priority?
Management of forest ecosystems to sustain desired benefits requires knowledge of how forests change over time in response to succession, natural disturbances, and management practices such as timber harvest. Inherent in virtually all forest management plans is the underlying requirement of sustainability-that forests will be managed in a manner so that their future capacity to produce products, services, and amenities will not be diminished. However, many alternative sustainable management programs can be selected for a given forest. Some emphasize forest products, others emphasize dispersed recreation opportunities, and still others emphasize biodiversity. One of the greatest challenges facing land-management planners is how to balance competing resource demands.
